HABITAT E MIGRAZIONI

Humpback whales are found in all oceans, from tropical waters to the poles. They are typically coastal whales, and they migrate every summer from tropics to the polar waters to feed on krill and schools of small fish and then return back to the tropical sea in winter, where they mate and give birth.

In August, the first you can see coming around Nosy Be, are the females who have just finished wean their young which are then already able to follow them. The young whale is really full of energy and curious. It is not rare to find him jumping out, having a look around, or sliding with belly faced up. Then, at the end of August, the individuals come. They are not yet mature but already self-employed: Usually, they trip in small groups, and they show all their power and ability with jumps and fast run on surface.
September, is the time of adults males and females: it is time for love and sex fighting: males show the female who is the strongest one with amazing duels: you can see them beating their fins and tails on the surface, jumping out of the water or staying in “singing position” with tail up. It is absolutely the most spectacular season for whale watching.
Finally, in October, pregnant females arrive, they are huge, very slow and often they are with another old female which stays with them to protect them and give them courage. We think that whales are a miracle of nature which you might see once in your life. In September, in Nosy Be, you willl feel like in a National Geographic documentary, and you can have the chance to shot incredible pictures and videos.
